Greater visibility for professional education
The support package for professional education has been in force since 1 October 2026. Among other things, it introduces new title add-ons for qualifications, protects the designation ‘college of professional education’ and allows English as an additional examination language for federal examinations. Rémy Hübschi, SERI Deputy Director, outlines the key changes.
How significant is professional education?
Rémy Hübschi: Professional education opens up excellent career prospects. It is geared towards the needs of the labour market and prepares candidates for challenging specialist or managerial roles. The training is competence- and labour market-oriented. Particular emphasis is placed on applied learning, the rapid implementation of new expertise and a high pace of innovation. Particular emphasis is placed on applied learning, the rapid implementation of new expertise and a high pace of innovation. In this way, the professional education sector provides the highly specialised Swiss economy with qualified skilled workers. Every year, around 27,500 people obtain a professional qualification.
What is the aim of the support package?
Professional qualifications are well known and highly regarded within the relevant sectors. However, it is not always easy for outsiders to recognise their value. A comparison of tertiary-level qualification figures shows that, in recent years, the number of higher education qualifications has risen more sharply than the number of professional qualifications. Furthermore, it is apparent that young people and their parents tend to regard the general education to higher education pathway as more desirable than the VET to professional education pathway. With this support package, we aim to further enhance the visibility, clarity and positioning of these qualifications. This includes making it easier to classify the qualifications both domestically and in an international context.
What specifically has changed since 1 October 2026?
One key change is the introduction of the new title add-ons ‘Professional Bachelor’ and ‘Professional Master’. Anyone who completes a federal examination for a Federal Diploma of Professional Education, or completes a study programme at a college of professional education will in the future be able to use the add-on ‘Professional Bachelor'. For federal examinations leading to an Advanced Federal Diploma of Professional Education, the title add-on is ‘Professional Master'.
Do these title add-ons only apply to future graduates?
No. All holders of a professional qualification may now use the relevant title add-on, regardless of when they obtained their qualification. It is important to note, however, that the title add-on may only be used in conjunction with the legally protected qualification title. The add-on in question appears after the qualification title, separated by a comma. For example: ‘dipl. social pedagogue HF, Professional Bachelor'.
Rémy Hübschi serves as Deputy Director of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and as head of the Vocational, Professional and Continuing Education Division.
Will former graduates automatically receive a new diploma?
No. Professional qualifications that have already been issued will not be reissued. However, qualification holders are still entitled to use the title add-on. In addition, SERI provides explanatory diploma supplements that can be presented with the professional qualification. Anyone requiring a new diploma supplement may apply for one from mid-October 2026, subject to a fee.
What does the support package mean for colleges of professional education?
The designation ‘college of professional education’ will be more strictly protected. From 1 October 2026, only education providers offering at least one federally recognised CPE study programme will be permitted to use this name. This will bring greater clarity for students, employers and the general public. Colleges of professional education will also have greater flexibility in designing their course catalogue. CPE postgraduate offerings will remain exclusive to them. In the future, these CPE offerings will no longer need to obtain recognition from SERI.
New from 1 October 2026 – key points at a glance
- New title add-ons: 'Professional Bachelor’ for federal diplomas and CPE diplomas, ‘Professional Master’ for advanced federal diplomas.
- Holders of professional qualifications under the previous system may also use the corresponding title add-on.
- Title add-ons may only be used in conjunction with the legally protected qualification title and are considered as a new simplified English translation.
- The designation ‘college of professional education’ is legally protected.
- Federal examinations may also be offered in English if the professional organisation(s) responsible for the given profession decide to do so.
Will it be possible to sit federal examinations in English in future?
Yes, but not automatically. The professional organisation(s) responsible for the profession decide whether the corresponding federal examinations may be offered in English in addition to official languages of Switzerland. In such cases, this will be explicitly stated in the examination rules for the given professional qualification. All professional qualifications must continue to be offered in the official languages.
What do you hope to achieve with the new measures?
Professional education is a strong educational pathway that is closely interwoven with working life. This support package will draw greater attention to this strength. At the same time, the tried-and-tested foundations remain in place: involvement of professional organisations, focus on practical training and very solid qualifications.
It has been a long journey, but it has been worth it. Since 2019, SERI has been examining and finalising possible measures in close consultation with its partners. Stakeholders from higher education institutions were also involved in this endeavour. I would like to take this opportunity to once again express my sincere gratitude to everyone involved. I am delighted that the support package has now been introduced.
