Working at SERI: Roman Kern
Gain insight into the work of SERI: Roman Kern is Head of the Swissnex unit, the global network connecting Switzerland and the world in education, research and innovation.
What do you do exactly?
As Head of the Swissnex Network Unit, I am in charge of managing and developing Swissnex, Switzerland's global network for education, research and innovation. I work with the six heads of our main offices abroad as well as with science counsellors at Swiss consular missions to raise Switzerland's profile as an innovation hotspot and an excellent location for education and research. My tasks include strategic planning, budgeting and staff supervision. I am also involved in efforts to make Swissnex more visible in Switzerland.
What do you like about your work in particular?
The global dimension is certainly fascinating. I find it very inspiring to work with innovative people from all over the world and to help them bring their ideas to fruition. Through my work at the head office, I can empower and represent the global Swissnex team, which I really appreciate. It is a particularly exciting challenge to combine creativity and policy work to position Switzerland as a leading country for research and innovation.
What challenges do you expect in the near future?
One of the challenges is to draw greater attention to the Swissnex network in Switzerland. I am convinced that the private sector can also benefit from our work: Swissnex builds networks, informs and inspires. At the same time, with our 'Swissnex for the Planet' initiative, we are exploring ways of using 'science diplomacy' not only to help people but also to protect and preserve planet Earth.
