Working at SERI: Jim Walker
Behind the scenes look at SERI activities: Jim Walker works as a specialist at the Declaration Centre at the Recognition of Professional Qualifications Unit.
What do you do exactly?
My job is to provide information to foreign applicants who wish to work in Switzerland. Typical questions include whether they can obtain recognition for their foreign qualification; which cantonal authority should be contacted to obtain a professional licence; whether it is possible to temporarily work as an architect in a particular canton. We endeavour to provide detailed replies to all these questions. For this reason, I also need to continuously update our platform www.reconnaissance.swiss. At the same time, I occasionally assist with the processing of applications from non-European countries for the recognition of foreign qualifications in the field of early childhood education.
What do you like about your work in particular?
I appreciate the variety of tasks that I am responsible for. My work brings me into contact not only with foreign professionals and companies but also with the cantonal authorities. Moreover, I find the research required to maintain high-quality information and the ongoing optimisation of our work processes particularly interesting. I also appreciate the quality of the human relationships within our team. This ensures an efficient, solution-oriented and supportive working atmosphere.
What challenges do you expect in the near future?
Over the past several years, the number of enquiries we receive has been steadily increasing. To address this situation, we have implemented more efficient processes and adapted our response templates. At the same time, we've developed user-friendly and relevant information tools. Since this information is also useful to cantonal authorities and Swiss employers, we regularly update our platform www.reconnaissance.swiss to provide a comprehensive overview of the regulations in place for the various professions and cantons.
